Sustainability / Energy efficiency

Save money and the planet

Energy efficiency measures that you can take, in order of pay-back period are:

  • Provide draft proofing to windows and doors
  • Use energy efficient light bulbs (these vary significantly in quality)
  • Insulate the roof space (but you may need to upgrade the ventilation too)
  • Install cavity wall full-fill insulation
  • Upgrade the heating with a condensing boiler, TRVs (Thermostatic Radiator Valves) to each radiator, and ‘intelligent’ programmer and thermostats
  • Install Photovoltaic (PV) panels (where orientation allows).

Other measures that have poor pay-back periods, but that may be carried out as part of renovations or for other reasons:

  • Secondary glazing or double glazing (although occupants benefit from reduced cold radiation off the windows)
  • Floor insulation
  • Internal and external wall insulation.
