Making sure that the build is built to spec and goes to plan

On building work from a value of about £15,000 to £500,000 a Chartered Building Surveyor will inspect and value the work (roles undertaken by Architects and Quantity Surveyors on larger projects).  This will ensure that the work is being carried out to a required standard and that the work is progressing on time; and he/she will develop the design as the build progresses, facilitate communication between the builder and client, and value the work to authorise interim payments and value variations to calculate the final contract sum.

On smaller projects the client may decide to project manage the build themselves.  If so, they must ensure that they have excellent communication skills, have a good relationship with their chosen builder and have a contract in place.
